The Salt Lake Tribune is running their first Salt Tribune Choice Awards to give people an opportunity to vote for the best that Utah has to offer, and Lagoon is up for a couple of the awards. Here is your opportunity to help Lagoon out by voting for them. The voting period will run from now until the end of May, and Lagoon appears in the following categories: Tourist spots and Family outings in the Destinations section.
Here is the link to participate: http://choiceawards.sltrib.com/
By the way, I noticed that you can write in places in each category. I was thinking that we could write in Lagoon's Pioneer Village under the category of Galleries/museums because Lagoon's has an amazing collection in Pioneer Village that easily rivals that of any historic gallery or museum. What do you think? Are there other categories that you think Lagoon deserves to be in?

Hey gang!

I just joined this forum to get some updates on what's going on at our local amusement park, Lagoon! I'm glad this forum is here, as I'm very interested in what's happening at the park.

A little about me....I'm a Utah native, and have been going to Lagoon ever since I was little. I run a horticulture company in Salt Lake, and am actively involved in Halloween entertainment (more about that another day!) I'm also a BIG Disneyland fan, and compare all my other amusement/theme park experiences against them.

Now, about that e-mail I sent. About 1-1/2 years before Lagoon got it's interactive fountain near the front of the park, I sent them an email with some suggestions I'd like to see. One of them was an interactive fountain. (I don't recall the others.) I was pleasantly surprised when the following year or so, an interactive fountain was installed! Kinda cool! Were they listening to me? Did they actually take my suggestions and run with it? I like to think they did.

Last year, I visited Lagoon a few times with my family (more than I normally do, on account of my kids having season passports). I'm not one to ride the rides that much, so I would stand by and wait while my family went on the rides. This afforded me the opportunity to REALLY take in the park and notice a few things. While there were a number of things Lagoon was doing right, there were quite a few things I noticed that were in desperate need of attention.

After taking a mental note of all the these things, I sent Lagoon an e-mail via their "contact us" link on their web site. What follows is the ENTIRE e-mail I sent on August 24, 2012.....

Dear Lagoon Executives,

I'm a Utah native, and I've been coming to Lagoon since I was a little kid. I have LOTS of great memories in the park! Now my kids are building great memories there! I LOVE Utah, and I LOVE the fact that we have one of the oldest amusement parks in the country!

A few years ago, I e-mailed you about the idea of putting an interactive water fountain in the park. About 1-2 years later, you put one in. I like to think it was because of my suggestion!

While there are some WONDERFUL things you have done with the park, I must admit I have been quite disappointed with what I've seen at Lagoon in recent years. It seems that instead of spending the money to fix, refurbish, paint, update, repave, etc., you have decided spend those MILLIONS of dollars to add a moderately sized attraction each year. Why not take a lesson from Disney and NOT add a new ride each year and just update, re-theme, paint, or refurbish what you have! Then, every couple of years or so, knock everyone's socks off with a HUGE new attraction! Something Six Flags would be envious of!

I was at the park this past week and came up with some suggestions for improvement based on what I saw:

1) REPAVE AND RE-STRIPE THE PARKING LOT! I almost feel I need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to drive through it! It's quite unsightly as well, with all the cracks and patch jobs.

2) REPAVE THE MIDWAY IN ITS ENTIRETY! Patch jobs here and there have lead to a disheveled look. Maybe redo it in textured/stained concrete instead of HOT, blacktop! That way you can have different "themes" in
different areas!

3) TAKE CARE OF THE RUSTING! There's LOTS of rust on many of the supports, and other structures. Chipped paint as well! Re-painting these spots, or even entire attractions, would make them look more attended to! And there's LOTS of places that need some paint work: queue fencing, buildings, ride supports, ride vehicles.

4) DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE CALCIUM/LIME DEPOSITS AT LAGOON-A-BEACH!! It's everywhere, and it looks TERRIBLE! In some cases, entire rocks are encrusted with 1/8" of deposits. A LOT of time has to have gone by (years?) to accumulate that much! Also, fix the tile "Lagoon-A-Beach" sign along the lazy river. I remember when the whole thing had a waterfall over it. Now just the end has a little.
Also, as an idea on how to update the area WITHOUT having to completely redo it, why not have the volcano fountains in the kiddie area shoot off large bursts instead of one continuous fountain. You could still have water spilling out the tops and onto the slides, but the occasional/random burst (or eruptions) would be quite fun!

5) BETTER AND UPDATED THEMING WHERE APPLICABLE. "Jumping Dragon", "Dracula's Castle" and "Rattlesnake Rapids" have to be the best themed attractions in the park. "The Bat", "The Spider", and "Bombora" are close behind. However, more could have been done to make some of the newer attractions themes look better and be more immersive. "Wicked" would have done well to have had a more enclosed queue line further out, and one that fit a more solid theme (what IS the theme of that ride anyway?). "Log Flume" needs more attractive theming throughout the ride. A better attempt at hiding the flume walls and creating something to look at wouldn't be hard to achieve. We live near LOTS of old mining towns, so theme elements shouldn't be that hard to find!
I realize that most of the rides can't have amazing theming because of where they are and the type of ride/attraction it is. But, where possible, the theming needs to be updated, fixed, and/or expanded.

6) BATHROOMS! The bathrooms on the extreme ends of the park are the worst! The others are better, but could use hands-free faucets (Lagoon-A-Beach), given the fact that there are THOUSANDS of people touching them every day!

7) FIX THE GAMES IN THE MIDWAY! Some of these games need attention and updating. The laminate counter tops are dated, and some of the games are starting to look old. Admittedly, the games are what seem to be kept up the best, but I think it's the buildings that need the most attention. Painting, redecorating, and lighting. Which brings me to my next subject.

8) UPDATE/FIX THE LIGHTING! I'm amazed that you are still using incandescent flood lights on some of your attractions ("Terror Ride" and "Dracula's Castle" for example), or so it seems. Also, there are bulbs out all over the place, and some neon in some areas doesn't work. There are very good LED flood lights and flexible LED strips that can be used in place of some of these forms of lighting. They are easy to find, last MUCH longer, and cost less to operate, thereby lowering your operating expenses.
Another suggestion would be to update the Midway with popcorn lighting (or bitsy bulbs) along the roof lines of the buildings. This would DRAMATICALLY add more appeal to the areas and keep people around the games longer, which means more revenue coming in through the games! These bulbs are also available in LED form! VERY cool!
While we are on the subject of LED lighting, the "Sky Scraper" could use the LED treatment as well, ON BOTH SIDES! The use of RGB LEDs on that HUGE structure would look AMAZING from both the freeway AND the park! There's LOTS of great effects and patterns RGB LEDs could do in place of the traditional incandescent lights that are presently on it. PLUS, it will cut down on man hours having to replace burnt out bulbs all the time. Right now, it just looks tired and worn. A simple update with RGB LEDs would bring new life to that ride without having tear it down and build something to replace it. (Ask Disney how they did it with Mickey's Fun Wheel! They did just what I'm suggesting!) While you're at it, it could use the paint job treatment as well!
By the way, where's the chasing lights on the wooden roller coaster? That's something I miss seeing at night when I leave after a fun day!!

9) BASIC CLEANING OF COBWEBS, ETC.! The spiderwebs and dead insects are all over the place! A simple twice or three times a week wipe down/cleaning of these unsightly messes would greatly improve the look of some attractions and buildings, and wouldn't cost much more to take care of.

10) GARDENS, PLANTERS AND LANDSCAPING NEEDS SOME WORK!! I noticed earlier on in the season that the gardens/planters didn't look so great. Mostly because they were just planted, and still needed time to grow into their spaces, which they have done by now...for the most part. But the summer is almost over, and the planters are JUST NOW starting to look good! There are ways to get the planter beds looking good from day one! One way is to plant them in Garden Panels. They require NO SOIL and use less water. PLUS you can start them in the greenhouse and move them into the desired locations when ready. They would be virtually invisible by the time the plants have filled in. Then either maintain them as is, or do a new rotation of plants half way through the season adding new color and a new look to the park! Here's some info on them... http://www.topsidersinc.com/documents/09_10_05_FGP.pdf
Here's another suggestion for the planters... http://gsky.com/ I know it's for a green wall system, but it can be used on the ground as well.
Another problem with the landscaping is some of the planters for the trees, especially those near "Dracula's Castle" and out front of the entrance to the park, are BADLY in need of some attention or replacement. They are cracked, broken, and the paint is chipping off. Quite unsightly looking and doesn't give the park a well-maintained look.
There's even a 7'-8' tree stump in a planter over by "OdySea" that looks like it's been there for a year or so and not fully removed! UGLY!

11) THE LAKE IS GROSS! I know this is one of Lagoons oldest parts, but it is one of the most unsightly. The moss, algae, and gunk that grows and collects in it make for an unpleasant sight during the day. One thought would be to shut off the inlet from whatever water source is filling the lake, drain it, clean the entire lake bottom out, cover the bottom with a cement base (for ease of cleaning), and refill it with clean water that gets cycled and filtered/treated, and plant it with mosquito eating fish. Maybe do what Disneyland does (I know you aren't Disneyland, but hear me out) and color the water so the piping for the fountains and the bottom can't be seen. While you're at it, update the fountains to be more attractive. I've notice one of them hasn't worked for months!

12) THE PAVILIONS NEED BIRD CONTROL AND CLEANING! I ate lunch one day in one of the pavilions and had a hard time finding a clean place to sit and enjoy my food. The tables were dirty with who-knows-what, and the rafters above were covered in bird poop, dust, and spider webs. A simple fix to the bird problem would be bird netting! Small enough to keep even the finches out, yet unobtrusive enough to not be ugly. The netting will still let the lighting through as well. As far as the spider webs and dust, hose it down occasionally. Like, AT LEAST once a month occasionally! On ALL of them!

All of these suggestions could be implemented in a within a 2-3 year span in lieu of spending money on a new attraction/ride, and give the park a near new look! There are MANY great things you are doing right at Lagoon. I just thought I'd point out the most GLARING problems that need to be addressed. I DO NOT pretend to know what you have planned or what you do throughout the season in the park, but based on my observations, these problems are NOT being addressed much, if at all!

When discussing the issue with friends and family members, the general consensus is that they don't like to go to Lagoon because it attracts a lower-class crowd, and that it's gross! All I ever hear is the complaints they have about Lagoon. I believe it is because of the things I've mentioned above. If more effort was spent on maintaining, updating, refurbishing, painting, cleaning, etc., more people with larger disposable incomes would be interested in visiting the park.

I am not, nor have I been, an amusement park employee. However, I would LOVE the opportunity to work at Lagoon as a park manager/executive and help make the decisions as to what needs to be done in the park to improve it and what monies should go where to do so. (In my e-mail, I should have mentioned to them that I am a business owner and know something about managing a business and how to attract and maintain customers....but I didn't) Building more and more rides is not always the answer. Proper maintenance, exceptional service, and a clean and fun atmosphere will sell more tickets and be more appreciated in the long run. Lagoon has the oldest operating wooden roller coaster on the west coast! Let's celebrate that fact and make the park worthy to have that designation! If you would like my help, I would love to talk with you about the opportunity to work with your great company in a capacity that would be beneficial to both of us! Give me a call some time! 801-232-xxxx

Thanks for your consideration, and for letting me bend your ear. And Thank You again, for the many years of fun Lagoon has provided me and my family!

Sincerely,

John

P.S. I miss Fascination!

Pretty BOLD, don't you think? Well, about a month or so later, I received a nice email back from the VP (if I remember correctly), addressing some of the concerns I brought up. I'll share that response email as soon as I can track it down.

The REAL thing I want to point out, and the reason why I'm posting this thread, is that it seems as though they were listening. There's new paint on some of the rides (ie. Colossus, Wild Mouse, Rock-o-Plane...any others?) which doesn't seem to have happened much, if at all, in the past few years, and LEDs are rumored to be going on the Sky Scraper wheel (according to screamscape.com). I'll be interested to see what other improvements they have made to the park that correspond to my email, either by coincidence or by design. Either way, it shows SOME effort to make the park better.

So, what say YOU? Do you think they were listening? Or is it all just a coincidence that my observations on improvements are being addressed? What is YOUR overall feeling about the park? Do you agree or disagree with my suggestions to the Lagoon executives?
