Except for the Carousel, The Roller Coaster is Lagoon's oldest ride still in operation and one of the oldest roller coasters in North America. This coaster is over 80 years and a classic.
This ride started out being known as the Giant Coaster. Then for some reason the name was changed to Lagoon Dipper. This is what Lagoon lists the name of the ride as in 1929. Chances are the name was changed to just Roller Coaster in 1954 when the ride was reconditioned and new cars were introduced. This was done because the ride was partially destroyed by fire in 1953.
Although some people worry that the ride is going to fall apart as the train travels through it, the ride is very safe. Most wooden coasters, like Lagoon's, are designed with that "fall apart" feel to them. Each morning the track is walked and checked for any problems. After that the ride is put through a series of safety checks to make sure it is running smoothly. If everything checks out ok, only then, is it opened to the public.
This ride is a must for every coaster enthusiast and park guest. It's a great ride for anyone!
