Are you prepared to get scared?

Frightmares is Lagoon’s Halloween celebration event that occurs every October and lasts on average about 5 weeks. The park opens up Friday, Saturday, and Sunday each week and includes Halloween attractions for people to enjoy like haunted houses and areas, a kid’s trick-or-treat house, and live entertainment. During the event the park is dressed up with Halloween decorations, the midway music is changed to Halloween themed songs, and fog machines are placed in various places to add an interesting look and feel to the park.

Frightmares opened up for the first time in October of 1995 with two haunted houses, a trick-or-treat house for the kids, and a straw maze for the kids. This was Lagoon’s answer to the increasing popularity of adding a Halloween event to an amusement park schedule and allowed Lagoon to extend their operating season to the end of October. Prior to this Lagoon closed it’s gates each year at the end of September.

When Frightmares first began a couple of the pavilions over near the Opera House were turned into the two haunted houses Nightmare Midway and The Labyrinth. Some of the rides in Kiddieland closed up and in there place sat Spook-A-Boo and Scary & Crow’s Straw Maze. On the south end of the park the old Speedway Sr. ride was overrun with trolls and became the Utah Troll Road. To the east of Putter Around the Park sat the Junkyard Maze filled with all sorts of old items from Lagoon’s past. For years this is what guests expected when they showed up in October.

Things have obviously changed since it’s first year. The Nightmare Midway was split into two houses allowing Lagoon to open up a third haunted house without using any additional space. It has since been replaced by other house concepts. The straw maze met it’s end when Kiddieland got an overhaul in 2004. Troll Road disappeared when Speedway Sr. got removed to make way for Cliffhanger. The Junkyard got moved from it’s original location to it’s current home and the Oak Terrace got rebuilt to house one of the haunted houses after OdySea took the place of the old Gaslight Terrace.

Lagoon continues to modify and change the Frightmares experience each year to keep guests coming back for more. For the 2008 season you can experience the new haunted house: Deception, located just east of the Bat. Hal O. Ween High and the Fun House of Fear will be returning for another year. Spook-A-Boo is making it’s return for a 14th season delighting children and of course giving out candy as usual. The Frightmares live entertainment area that is put up each year in front of Game Time Arcade has gotten a really nice overhaul and looks better than ever.
